Peggy Lee - I’m a Woman
Peggy Lee got her big break in 1941 while she caught the ear of Benny Goodman’s fiancée, Lady Alice Duckworth, at a Chicago nightclub. Benny came, heard and hired her as a replacement for Helen Forrest. Her two-year stint and several No. 1 hits established her singing career. Later in the 40’s she worked at Capitol Records, writing, producing and singing a long string of hits such as “Mañana”. In 1955 she wrote the lyrics for all the songs in Lady and the Tramp as well as speaking and singing for multiple characters.
“I’m a Woman” is the title cut of a 1963 album and became one of her signature songs. My rock-scorning father loved Peggy for this song and “Is That All There Is?”. Ironically, they were both written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who cranked out hit after hit for The Coasters, The Drifters, Elvis Presley…
